Puerto Rico was the place she used to go during most of her early summers. She loved the freedom of this magical place, where she often cut bananas straight from the trees and being able to relax in a hammock. She was thrilled spending her vacations in the company of her cousins. Mia Roman was raised in Brooklyn, NY where her heart remains. Mia Roman’s wonderful journey into the art world began ever since she was a child running barefoot and wild. Being a fourth generation Artist and the eldest of 5, she grew up in a very creative environment that taught her the freedom of expression through creativity.
Mia Roman’s inspiration comes from many different places. She loves spirituality, politics, travel, current events, religion, culture, music, poetry, family, books… “LIFE” in general is a true inspiration for Mia. She can walk down the street and see someone wearing a dress and the pattern or colors of the dress will inspire a new idea. Every day there is something that inspires her to create. There is nothing more beautiful than the rhythm of life and so she can’t pin point one specific thing, it is all interesting and inspirational. As she states “my true inspiration is a big pot of LIFE SOUP!”.
When she began teaching and painting Mia began to dedicate more time towards art. One of her biggest influences and very close and dear one has been Mia’s grandfather Fernando Roman Sr. He was a wonderful landscape painter that loved his native land of Puerto Rico and exposed his art works there. Right after her grandfather’s passing she received a huge box in the mail. The box contained all the tools and inspiration she needed to get started, his art supplies, sketch pads, clippings, brushes, paints, lamp, etc. The sender was no other then Mr.Fernando Roman Sr, she knew immediately that he had sent her a very special message and a sign to never stop painting and to share her passion for art with the world. That was back in 2006 and she have never looked back. Mia always gives thanks for this beautiful message and gift, and carries his brushes to all of her exhibits, promotions and functions. She feels truly grateful and very happy to be part of all of the many art movements that she been involved in.

Mia finds strength and confidentiality within her inner roots and finds that she can stand upon a star and soar, fly, and dream with no limits.
Her Artistic influence has been the Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo. Mia finds that her work reflects some of Kahlo’s style. Mia admires Frida’s courage and loves that Frida used her art to tell her story, having been able to sing her song and to live her life in a full palette of her colors not others!!!. That is what Mia Roman finds admirable, inspiring and courageous.

Mia Roman is affiliated to several organizations and corporations. These are a few that are dear to her heart: “Chamaca Arts” is an all Female Artist group that are agents of change. Using creativity to bring awareness, education, activism, healing, inspiration, culture, politics, and feminism to the front lines. Founded by Mia Roman several years ago to support women and girls in the field of creativity. The organization can be found on Facebook and is for Female members only.
“Expressive Arts Director at the Ruth Fernandez Family Residence in the South Bronx” is homeless shelter for families in transition, where she gives a weekly two hour Expressive Arts workshop for children. The idea was born from the need to save the children of our future. The Director Mr. Arsenio Gonzalez and Mia Roman sat down and agreed that the children lacked the support and leadership to break the chains of poverty, illiteracy, drugs, and gang violence. To be poor, of color, a child, and live in the worst areas of the South Bronx does not have to be all they know or their life sentence. Arsenio Gonzalez and Mia Roman created this program to help them academically and to give them the confidence to grow, learn, heal, and share their voices as strong contributors to this Universe. “THE LIFE SENTENCE FOR THESE CHILDREN IS….YES WE CAN!” States Mia.

The other organization Mia Roman is part of is: “Advisory Board Member of Latinas 50 Plus” this organization is designed to pay tribute to Latinas over fifty years of age whom were pioneers. They shaped their careers in a time when women of latina heritage were venturing onto pathways where very few latinas were seen or accepted. This program acknowledges the trailblazers whom were among the first in their profession. By creating this venue which expresses public appreciation for latina women over fifty, they will have the opportunity to tell their personal narratives. They can provide a historical perspective on what it was like to have lived in a time when latina feminism was not the norm or tolerated.
